7.1 Definitions for the Key Shown on the Maps
In order to demonstrate a clear picture of the sites and their surrounding we have prepared maps that also show existing mineral sites, designated lorry roads, flood maps, conservation areas, any ecological designation and landscape designation in close proximity to each site.
Only the statutory ecological and landscape designations have been shown as an approach to our local designations is being developed in the Core Strategy and Development Control document (Preferred Options), which will be further developed as the process evolves and an approach to each local designation adopted.
The Ecological designations are shown below in order of highest designation (in order to avoid cluttering the maps we have only shown the highest designation on a site where one or many of the lower designations also exist on the site) as follows:
| Ramsar Site | A SSSI considered to be of International importance as waterfowl habitat designated under the Ramsar International Convention on Wetlands (1971). |
| Special Protection Area | A SSSI considered to be of European importance designated under the EC Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. |
| Special Area of Conservation | A SSSI considered to be of European importance designated under the EC Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora. |
| Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) | Sites that are notified and protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 on account of their flora, fauna, geological and/or physiographical features of National importance. |
| National Park (The Broads) |
The Broads was established as having equivalent status to a national park under the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act in 1988. The Broads are managed by the Broads Authority for the purposes of: (a) conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Broads; (b) promoting opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Broads by the public; and (c) protecting the interests of navigation. |
| National Nature Reserve | Sites designated under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981by Natural England. These represent some of the most important natural and semi-natural ecosystems in Great Britain, and are managed to protect the conservation value of the habitats that occur on these sites. |
The Landscape designation shown is:
| Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) | Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designated under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 for the purposes of preserving and enhancing their natural beauty considered to be of National importance. |
Other layers included:
| Designated Lorry Roads | Based on Principal Routes, Main Distributor Routes and HGV Access Routes. |
| Environment Agency Flood Map Zone 3 | Areas with an annual probability of flooding of 1.0% or greater from rivers, and 0.5% or greater from the sea. |
| Conservation Areas | These areas are designated by the local authority under the Civic Amenities Act 1967. They are areas of special architectural or historic interest whose character or appearance is worth protecting or enhancing. |
| Existing Minerals Site | These are the operational mineral sites identified in close proximity to the site allocations. |
